What do OWL, RWL and WSW tyre markings mean?

OWL, RWL, WSW and similar abbreviations usually describe tyre sidewall appearance: white letters, a whitewall/white stripe or a black sidewall. They are not load, speed, season or safety ratings. If you see RVL, first check whether it is a typo for RWL or a supplier-specific internal code.

These are sidewall appearance codes

OWL, RWL, WSW, BSW and similar abbreviations describe how the tyre sidewall looks. They may appear next to the size, in the model name or in a specification table. The key point: these codes do not mean that a tyre is better, quieter, winter-rated or reinforced. They tell you whether the sidewall has white letters, a white stripe, a black sidewall or decorative raised detailing.

For technical markings such as DOT, RFT, 3PMSF, XL or construction letters R/B/D/ZR, start with the general tyre markings page: tyre markings guide.

Main codes and meanings

CodeMeaningPractical meaning for buyers
BSW / BW / BLK / BLBlack Sidewall: a plain black sidewall with no white letters or white stripe. The default look on most modern tyres. Choose it for a neutral appearance and easier cleaning.
OWLOutlined White Letters: raised letters with a white outline while the centre usually remains black.Common on SUV, 4x4, all-terrain and mud-terrain tyres. More visible than blackwall, subtler than RWL.
RWLRaised White Letters: raised letters where the full letter surface is white.Classic muscle-car, retro and some 4x4 styling. It needs more cleaning to stay bright.
ORWL / ROWLOutlined Raised White Letters: raised letters with a white outline. May be written as ORWL or ROWL.A middle ground between OWL and RWL. Check the product photo or manufacturer table before ordering.
WSW / WW / WSEWhite Sidewall or White Wall: a white sidewall stripe. The stripe width may also be listed.Relevant for classic, retro or special-style vehicles. Availability in modern sizes is limited.
RBL / SBL / BSL / VSBRaised/Serrated/Vertical Black Letters: raised or textured black letters or a black decorative band.A visual but subtle option. It usually means a raised black sidewall, not white lettering.

What about RVL?

Reliable manufacturer and tyre catalog sources consistently use RWL, not RVL. RWL means Raised White Letters. So if you see RVL in a product title, supplier file or advert, compare it with the product image and manufacturer specification first.

In practice, RVL may be a typo, an import error or a supplier-specific internal abbreviation. If white letters matter to you, confirm whether the exact tyre is RWL, OWL, ORWL or BSW before ordering. The same model can use different sidewall styles in different sizes.

What these codes do not change

A sidewall style code is cosmetic. It does not increase load capacity, change rim size or make the tyre winter-ready. Technical specifications still come first.

  • Size: 235/75 R15 OWL and 235/75 R15 BSW remain the same size if all other indexes match.
  • Load and speed: RWL is not the same as XL, C or HL. Load is shown by the load index and load-type markings.
  • Season: white letters do not mean summer or winter. For winter use, check 3PMSF, season and real specifications.
  • EU label: fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise are rated separately.

When sidewall style matters

Even though it is not a safety rating, sidewall style can matter a lot when vehicle appearance is part of the project.

  • Classic and retro cars: RWL or WSW can be part of a period-correct look.
  • 4x4 and SUV: OWL or RWL is often chosen for a stronger all-terrain or mud-terrain look.
  • Set matching: if you replace only two tyres, a different sidewall style will be visible even when the size is identical.
  • Stock accuracy: some catalogues list separate BSW, OWL or RWL variants for the same model, so the code should not be ignored.

How to order and mount without surprises

If white letters or a whitewall stripe matter to you, choosing the size is not enough. Confirm which side should face outward before fitting.

  1. Check the product line: look for BSW, OWL, RWL, ORWL, WSW or a sidewall photo.
  2. Tell the installer: ask for “white letters out" or “black sidewall out" if the tyre allows it.
  3. Respect direction: if the tyre says “Outside", “Inside" or has a rotation arrow, those markings matter more than appearance.

Important: you cannot always choose the outer side

Mounting rule: if a tyre is asymmetric, the “Outside" side must face outward. If it is directional, the rotation arrow must match the driving direction. White-letter orientation cannot override correct fitting.

Caring for white letters and whitewalls

White letters look good only when they are clean. A BFGoodrich/Michelin technical note also makes the point that white-letter aesthetics matter to customers, while discoloration does not automatically mean a ride, handling or wear issue.

  • Blue or green coating on new tyres is often transport protection. Warm water, mild soap and a brush normally remove it.
  • Clean regularly to remove brake dust, mud and tyre dressing overspray.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, solvents and pressure washing too close to the sidewall because they can age rubber.
  • Some browning can appear over time. If white letters are critical, choose a known model and check DOT and storage condition.

Where to start searching

Many catalogues do not have a dedicated sidewall-style filter, so start with the correct size and category, then check the model name, images and specification table. OWL/RWL is more common on 4x4, SUV, classic and some all-terrain tyres.

Frequently asked questions

Is an OWL or RWL tyre better than BSW?

Not automatically. It is an appearance code. Tyre quality depends on model, compound, size, load and speed indexes, season, EU label and real testing.

Can I hide the white letters on the inside?

Often yes, if the tyre is symmetric and non-directional. But if the sidewall has “Outside/Inside" or a rotation arrow, the installer must follow those markings.

Are WSW and RWL the same thing?

No. WSW means a white sidewall or white stripe, while RWL means raised white letters. One tyre may have a white stripe, another only white letters.

Why is one size OWL and another size of the same model BSW?

Manufacturers do not always make every size with the same sidewall style. This is common on SUV, American, classic and niche tyre sizes.

Choose the size, then check the sidewall
